Replacing deteriorating stormwater pipes under roadways while keeping limits of disturbances within Right of Way (ROW) limits or restricted easements is challenging. This is especially so when dealing with infrastructure that is 25-30 years old with no records of past temporary repairs. Often, the situation involves a failing system that has lead to sinkholes, catch basin collapses, or in severe cases roadway failures. A key challenge is that the true condition of the system becomes evident only after excavation begins, enabling a direct assessment. It is common at this stage to find that the problem extends beyond the ROW and onto private property. Complicating the task is a lack of funding for acquiring additional easements which necessitates joining new piping material with an older, failing system usually of a different material type. The focus of this presentation will be on the detailed methods and materials employed to successfully complete such a task. The true test of success will be time.
