Name
Smart stormwater management in the Capitol Region Watershed District (CRWD)
Date & Time
Thursday, August 27, 2026, 8:50 AM - 9:30 AM
Description
Capitol Region Watershed District manages more than 40 square miles of highly urbanized land in St. Paul, Minnesota, where 46% of the surface is impervious. Innovation and collaborative partnerships are critical to implementing effective stormwater management in this dense environment.
CRWD currently operates five CMAC systems, a real-time control methodology that uses a cloud-based platform to integrate continuous sensor data, hydrological forecasts and predictive models. Algorithms autonomously adjust control structures based on anticipated conditions, shifting operations from static to dynamic and maximizing existing gray and green asset capacity without new capital investment.
Two case studies illustrate results. At the 35-acre Allianz Field brownfield, CMAC integration into a centralized rainwater harvesting system achieved 89% total phosphorus reduction while reducing capital costs. At Curtiss Field in Falcon Heights, combining underground infiltration pipes with a CMAC-enabled outlet increased total flood storage by 58% at half the cost of installing additional pipe storage.
