Common Mistakes in Selecting and Implementing BMPs – Lessons Learned from 40 Years of BMP Monitoring

An understanding of BMP removal processes is essential in selecting an effective BMP, and poorly performing BMPs are generally due to a failure to match a BMP with the existing conditions. Common errors in selecting and using BMPs include failure to consider baseflow conditions, failure to match stormwater chemistry with BMP removal processes, improper maintenance activities, and failure to verify conditions prior to design. LID practices, such as those which rely on bio-adsorption or denitrification, require specific concentrations of the target pollutant for proper operation, and none of the monitored projects verified these conditions prior to design. Removal systems based on the treatment train concept must ensure that the treatment systems are complimentary with no significant overlap in removal processes. Designers should be aware that removal efficiencies for proprietary BMPs are based on conditions and concentrations which may not be representative of conditions for a particular project. Common BMPs will be discussed and observed issues which impact system performance will be addressed.
