Abu Dhabi’s "Riyadh North" project spreads over an area of 40 square kilometers and includes an internal network of 300-1,000 mm diameter pipeline, proposed to be connected with 3,000 mm diameter pipes to discharge stormwater to a channel located 30 kilometers away. Five detention ponds, each with design capacity to store 25 years of flood volume have been proposed to collect the stormwater within and outside the community. These ponds will be provided with Geocell Strata Web cells filled with concrete. The thickness of the lining is 100 mm, which is replaced for the normal riprap lining of 600 mm. Replacement of 600 mm riprap with the alternate material has resulted in cost savings of up to 30% of the original cost, but also helped to the carbon footprint by reducing the quantities of crushed aggregates to approximately one-third. This will also create natural water bodies within the communities that will have positive impact on the local environment and create recreational facilities surrounding these ponds.
