Description

For years, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has been designing its stormwater and transportation systems using traditional design methods. Approximately 10 years ago, the department recognized that sea level rise was contributing to flooding of roadways, and stormwater systems were failing due to the rising tailwater conditions. Although these changes helped to improve the new designs, it could not correct the existing facilities. District 2 covers 18 counties in northeast Florida and covers an area from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. Coastal flooding on both sides of the state has increased in flood stages, duration and frequency. Additionally, the erosive wave action has increased causing extensive erosion on the department's transportation system, which can be directly attributed to the rising sea levels. The issues that the area is experiencing are occurring during tropical systems such as hurricanes, nor'easters, King tides, and intense rainfall events. FDOT District 2 has created a long-term program to begin to address these issues. In this presentation, the speakers will identify the ongoing and future resiliency projects in FDOT District 2, many of which are partnership projects that either address the issues directly or in some cases, indirectly.
