Description

The Dundee Elementary Green Infrastructure Outdoor Classroom was a collaborative project between the Omaha Public School District’s Dundee Elementary School, the City of Omaha Stormwater Program, and Keep Omaha Beautiful. The north patio and lawn areas had become an underutilized space for a number of reasons. Various negative factors, including poor drainage due to significant erosion problems, called for a solution. Burns & McDonnell and Vireo provided engineering and landscape architectural services to design and utilize green infrastructure practices to alleviate the site issues, while creating a unique educational opportunity for both students and the surrounding community in the form of an outdoor classroom. The team worked with the school and students to bring them into the design process, letting them design their outdoor classroom and allow the engineer and landscape architect to educate and mentor the students on STEM related topics. The green infrastructure elements were specifically designed to provide drainage, but also educate and be used as part of classroom exercises.
