PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) enter stormwater systems primarily through runoff from urban areas, particularly in locations where products such as firefighting foam, waterproof clothing, carpets, and nonstick cookware are used. Additionally, PFAS can leach into stormwater from contaminated soil and groundwater. This session will explore strategies to mitigate PFAS from entering stormwater, such as source control, which involves promoting or mandating the replacement of PFAS-containing products—such as nonstick cookware, waterproofing agents, and firefighting foams—with safer alternatives. Additionally, the presentation will focus on best management practices and source control measures that can be implemented. Focusing on areas with known PFAS contamination, such as military bases and airports, where AFFF has been used, the implementation of on-site treatment methods like filtration and activated carbon can help manage stormwater runoff. Source control measures can aid in the effectiveness of these treatment methods by reducing the overall treatment loadings.
