Description

The North Canadian River near Oklahoma City was migrating away from an existing intake for a power generation facility. If the river migrated completely away from the intake, the power generation facility would have had to shut down, disrupting the electrical generation for the City of Oklahoma City. Burns & McDonnell completed an evaluation and study to determine potential solutions to the erosion. Between the time Burns & McDonnel personnel visited the site and completed the evaluation, the site experienced historic flooding causing the channel to migrate over 100 feet normal to the bank. Over Labor Day weekend, Burns & McDonnell was given notice to proceed to complete the design while the client hired a contractor, with a goal of construction completion by December 31st. Burns & McDonnell used HEC-RAS to model the existing and proposed conditions while collecting soil samples to perform sieve analysis supporting scour calculations. In this session, speakers will discuss project elements, including vegetation and stabilization efforts.
