Name
Mapping sediment to plan smarter: A practical bathymetric survey approach for urban stormwater ponds
Date & Time
Thursday, August 27, 2026, 11:20 AM - 12:00 PM
Description
Sediment accumulation in stormwater ponds is not uniform, and in fully developed urban environments it follows patterns that differ significantly from suburban systems. To support a 10-year Capital Improvement Plan, Minneapolis conducted a bathymetric survey of 16 stormwater ponds between April and October 2025, building on a 2021 dataset.
The survey used ArcGIS fishnet grids scaled to pond area to ensure consistent sampling distribution. Field crews collected depth-to-sediment and depth-to-refusal measurements using a Trimble GPS unit, survey rod, and boat or waders, with data recorded in ESRI FieldMaps.
Combined with as-built drawings and site plans, the datasets enable analysis of sedimentation rates specific to an urban context where impervious surfaces, aging infrastructure and limited green space influence deposition differently than in newer developments. Results are being used to prioritize dredging, schedule maintenance and plan retrofits based on actual accumulation patterns rather than suburban assumptions.
