Description
Maple Canyon is a natural drainage corridor spanning approximately 100 acres in San Diego's Bankers Hill neighborhood. It receives runoff from 16 storm drain systems and drains into San Diego Bay across a watershed covering more than a square mile. Historically, uncontrolled runoff overwhelmed undersized infrastructure, causing erosion, sediment transport and flooding near a major transit route between downtown San Diego and the airport. The Maple Canyon Project is a multi-phased initiative combining stormwater infrastructure upgrades with ecological restoration at the watershed scale. Phase 1 replaced failing corrugated metal storm drains, realigned outfalls and installed energy dissipators including a new 48-inch storm drain on West Maple Street. Phase 2 targets severe channel degradation through 25 grade control structures, riprap stabilization, bioengineered solutions and native vegetation. Phases 1 and 2 are currently under construction at 80% completion.
