Lessons mearned: Long-term Maintenance of stormwater facilities
Date & Time
Wednesday, August 26, 2026, 1:00 PM - 1:40 PM
Description
Portland operates roughly 2,700 green streets, vegetated stormwater facilities in the right-of-way, maintained by a small field-based team. This presentation offers designers, planners and managers a view of stormwater management through the lens of maintenance staff. The session covers daily operations and maintenance work, special projects and field challenges, and the process of determining when soil rehabilitation and replanting is necessary for aging vegetated assets. The presenter also addresses misuse of stormwater facilities in urban environments and the creative solutions developed in response, alongside examples of design choices that complicate or simplify maintenance work. The presentation is photo-heavy and includes a short video of soil conveyance. It draws on material presented locally and regionally, with the goal of sharing Portland's operational lessons to help other municipalities develop and improve their own green stormwater infrastructure programs
