Description
The Bexar County Public Works Department operates and maintains nearly 1,000 miles of public roads and the associated storm water culvert systems. In addition, the City of San Antonio, the county seat, maintains an even greater amount of storm water assets. The two have maintained a stormwater management plan since the mid-1990s that includes asset management best practices. As part of that effort, they have inspected a large number of culverts and stormwater drainage systems and determined that they are near or at the end of life. The city and county have, over the past decade, evaluated and utilized several rehabilitation techniques to extend the life of these structures. They have bid and constructed over 5,000 linear feet of piping using geopolymer spray applied linings (SAPL). This presentation reviews a series of projects where SAPL technology has been employed in pipes ranging from 30 inches to 78 inches in diameter. This presentation will share the experiences in engineering and design of SAPL systems and report successes and lessons learned from the work conducted in southwestern Texas. The details of several individual task orders will include a summary of material selection of spray applied lining versus other trenchless alternatives as well as review and development of the standard specification for spray applied materials, pipe preparation, including, stopping of infiltration, repairing damaged inverts, spray applications techniques (centrifugally cast and hand applied) and the quality control methods used on the site.
